After completing Itjtawy, a glamours city worthy of a capital of a growing empire, now I march south to secure the land and wealth from the Nubians - by building a magnificent fort and trade centre, Iken, at the 2nd cataract.
While the region is not so stable so we build thick wall and train a formidable army, from the modern archaeological findings we know that Iken is much more than a boring military fort. It handles a large portion of the Egyptian-Nubian trade and extracts much wealth from it, and houses a sizable population since history begins till the decline of the pharonic Egypt.
So, here are my objectives at Iken:
1. Difficulty : Hard
2. Population target : 10000+
3. At least 8 palatial estates
4. Up to 90% population should get food, basic health and religious services
5. People should love me (eventually)
1. Urban and industrial planning
So I placed the core of the city at the west bank, situating between the flood plains and first line of dunes. This part of city is walled, with 1 palace loop at the north containing mansion, temple complex and 11 stable palatial eststes. 2 worker loops are subsequently developed at the centre and south, mainly containing fancy residences. Small industrial regions are fitted in between the loops, handling beer and linen production.
A dock area is located outside of north gate of the city, with a small worker community, workshops for pottery and more linen production, and storage yards handing the papyrus and chickpea import that are crucial to the palatial estates.
At the same time, 2 larger worker loops with education service are developed at the centre islands, then 2 smaller assessory worker communities with only basic services are developed at the southern tip of centre island and southern island.
City palace is placed at the southeast corner together with 17 gold mines. After the scripted invasion from the SE corner, I tried to develop another estate loop around the city palace. At its peak it can develop into 7 modest estates, but due to design flaws the service supplies are somewhat inconsistent and that the estates are thus not-so-stable. Nonetheless this loop is developed to fulfill personal population target, and, just for fun. It is expected to be sacrificed in case of future aggression from SE corner.
Flax farm is placed at west bank flood plain and barley farms are placed at west bank meadows. Majority of brewers and all linen weavers are placed at west bank main city to avoid occupying river traffic. A few brewers are placed at central island for local worker village supply.
Fig is main bulk of food and many farms are placed at flood plains at west bank, central (west) island, east bank and southern island. Such arrangement is also to produce food locally without burdening the river transport.
Ostriches are hunted both at the gold mines and at NE island, supplying plenty of game meat. The only problem is the long travelling distance in delivering them to the west bank granaries. This is further complicated by the clumsy river transport, where the west bank-center east island ferry often get jammed at the flood plain after inundation.
2. Military planning
A small fort housing 6 companies is located just outside of the main city across the first line of dunes.
A full navy with 6 warships and 4 transports is also placed.
A heavily armed fortress with 22 towers is placed at the south of the oasis outside of the second line of rocky dunes, guarding any attack from south or west of the main city. It can withstand attack from all directions. By luring enemies towards the fort with archers, all enemies can be easily defeated with an infantry counter-charge under heavy support fire from the fort.
A small series of 3 towers is placed at the east bank island, guarding the choke point of the river passage. The navy will block invading fleet at this site.
After 20 years of development and repelling several invasions, here are my results
- Final population : 10800~11460
- Noble population : 11 palatial estates + 7 modest estates. Housing ~30% of the population.
- Unemployment rate : 2%~3%
- Economy : Taxing at 15% and paying 45db/month. With the estates, the annual tax income is almost 3 times the wages. Selling beer and flax, buying clay, papyrus and chickpea. Cash overflows and no more worries for military budget since developing the estates.
- Military : A full cohort of 4 infantry and 2 archer companies. A big navy with 6 warships and 4 transports. West bank walled city. Heavily fortified fort guarding west side land invasion route and 3 towers help navy blocking left river passage.
I am sharing my Iken design for download, and wish you would like it. The first file is the pre-victory save. To win you just send a lavish gift to boost the KR up to 80, or you can keep running the city for longer. The second file is the post-victory save (KR accidentally rised) with both estate loops fully developed.
Thank you very much. @_@
