Bored with sandcastles?
October 26, 2001 10:46 AM EDT

With the sounds of chanting monks and catchy folk tunes while you build your castle and defend it from the attacking hordes of Duke Beauregard and his friends, Stronghold turns out to be a wonderful mix between City Building and Real Time Strategy.

While it has a more martial elelment Impression’s City Builders, Firefly‘s Stronghold offers a lot more (micro-) resource management than games like Age of Kings or Cossacks.

It just hit the stores here in Europe and it seems the US will be taken by storm pretty soon.

Bored? Find out more about Stronghold or just downlaod the demo.

Lords of the Realm 3 Announced
October 12, 2001 2:37 PM EDT

Pulling up Impressions’s main page shows that we need no longer wait to see what it is they’re working on next:

Impressions Games™ and Sierra™ today announced development of Lords of the Realm III, the long-awaited return of the companies’ highly successful Lords of the Realm series of games. The ultimate medieval simulation, Lords III covers the entire life of being a lord in the middle ages – castle building and design, rural estate management, acquiring knights and soldiers to make armies, warfare and conquest, politics and diplomacy, and the struggle with or against the Church, and with the rising merchant class. The elements that made the Lords of the Realm series a best seller worldwide are now powered by an all-new 3-D graphics engine designed to catapult the game to the forefront of the strategy genre in late 2002. More information can be found at http://www.lords3.com.

What’s Going On?
October 11, 2001 10:29 AM EDT

Thanks to the 3 people (Cherub bobT, Sigbjørn Koksæter, and Quinn) who dropped me a line informing me of this little mystery currently being drawn out for its full effect on the Impressions website. Looks to me like a logo for their upcoming game, to be revealed no later than October 18th. It’s still pretty fuzzy at the moment, but it’s looking to be like there might be some fisticuffs going on ;).

What’s up next for Impressions?
September 29, 2001 3:04 AM EDT

An update posted yesterday to Impressions’ main site has dropped a hint as to when we might find out what they’re working on next:

A local film crew paid us a visit, and while they were here we let them in on a little secret: the title of our next game. What could it be? We’re still not ready to tell everyone our little secret yet, but all shall be revealed soon. Stay tuned.

By the way, if you live in the New England area and have AT&T Cable, you can see Impressions Games at work on the October 18 edition of “Chowdah.” The show airs at 7:30 p.m. on AT&T 3.

Deadline Extended – Alexandria 3 Contest
September 23, 2001 8:05 PM EDT

At the semi-regular Mexican Food and Margarita Lunch in Texas today, homegrown put forth the idea of extending the deadline for the Alexandria 3 Beauty Contest to October 13, 2001. Cherub Bradius, Cherub Brugle and yours truly paused briefly over our enchiladas and then heartily endorsed his idea. No pictures of the event, no one brought a camera and we are too shy, anyway 🙂

A bit of extra time to polish up that entry is always welcome. Check out the rules and requirements over at the Competition Corner.

User database merger approaching
September 5, 2001 4:00 PM EDT

Time for a bit of a technical talk.

A long time ago we started with two separate databases, one for the Citybuilders and one for Age of Kings (and all that followed after). Now we’ve passed the stage where this was needed and the Powers Above (i.e. Zen) will be merging the two databases.
To make sure you’ll still be with us after the merger he asks you to make certain that your email address (as written in your profile)is:

  • accurate
  • an active account (i.e. we regularly get bounced emails from inactive hotmail users)
  • not filtered (i.e. AOL members sometimes might have too high of a restriction on their mail and thus resulting in forum emails being bounced)
  • not “overquota” (i.e. full mailbox)

… and most importantly, an account that you check regularly for mail.

We’ll be send out more details about the forum user database merge later in the month. Not being able to read these emails and follow the instructions contained in them could possibly result in your account being renamed or purged during the merge.

CBC Pharaoh Contest
August 23, 2001 3:14 AM EDT

The good folks at CityBuildingContests.net have gotten their latest competition underway. Called Emcampment, it’s a Pharaoh contest which will appeal to the more military-minded of you. The contest page is here, and here’s a snippet of the story, just to get you all excited:

It is a time of crisis. Our enemies, the Mitani, are growing in strength and are threatening our expansion to the East. A trade blockade has cut off our only access to the luxury items that the upper classes require. Worse still, a recently established mining colony at Sharuhen has been obliterated by the Mitani.

Egyptian Online Roleplaying?
July 10, 2001 3:30 PM EDT

Angel Draco just mailed me this intriguing link.

Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the experience was that I was not forced to continually watch my back worrying about who was going to kill me. Instead, just in the few hours that the test went on, a basic economy sprang up between players who had certain resources and those who didn’t yet.

This sounds like a game that could catch the attention of our pharaoh lovers.

I found this email in my inbox today, so I thought I’d share:

Good message for those that are looking for some excitement! Pharaoh competition on a map “Third Cataract” by Jayhawk starts this Sunday. We can promise you some fighting, some pyramid building and lots of fun.
If you’d like to participate, visit Competition Corner, read the rules and ask, if you have any doubts. No signup is required – you simply download the starting position, play the game and mail back your final save. Link to starting position and description of the mission will be posted on Sunday, but probably quite late, after the results of Caesar 3 competition are announced. You’ll have 2 weeks to play the map. Stay tuned!

Honesty requires me to say, that this map’s a joint effort by Cherub Baltic and yours truly. Let’s just say, if it’s fustrating, it’s my fault, if it’d fun, it’s thanks to Baltic.
Enjoy!

Mini-Competitions for Pharaoh and Caesar 3

Browsing through the forums I bumped into a message from Cherub Baltic. I guess this is what many of you have been waiting for:

I’m sure most of you have Caesar, too – well, if you don’t, please be patient for a while. Pharaoh competition will come right after that.

I don’t plan any big event right now, it will be just a few independent missions, like the preolympic competition last year. I have posted first preliminary info on C3 Heaven. More info will be available during the week… be sure to check Caesar Heaven on Friday 26th, if you intend to participate or are simply curious about the competition.

Cleopatra’s handwriting
January 18, 2001 7:23 AM EST

You may remember a thread a while ago which told you about a piece of papyrus that was found in an old museum? The papyrus contained a sample of one of Egypts best know pharaohs: Cleopatra.
Now if memory serves me well, it was not much more than her writing “Make it so” at the bottom of a request, but it’s the only example found so far.

Well, that piece of papyrus is currently on display in the Allard Pierson museum in Amsterdam. It’s part of a small exhibition showing some 250 artifacts of the time when Egypt was a Roman province.

I might find time to pop over there and take some pictures.
