Mac users – all is not lost!

I’m not sure if we still have anybody visiting us who’s using a Mac, but here’s a potentially good piece of news for those of you who are left.

It comes from this post in the Caesar III Heaven Tech Forum. Although the main thread wasn’t about Pharaoh, one of our Mac-playing C3 regulars dropped in the following line at the end of one of her posts:

PS: As for Pharaoh, it works under virtual PC, it’s just a little bit slower than a real mac-game.

There you go – there’s a bit of good news for you Mac chaps with Virtual PC ;).

Building a wall around your city.

Downloads update

Angel Draco sends news that he has updated the downloads section:

My mailbox is EMPTY! 50 new cities added. Plus 2 cool new utilities in the Misc. Section. Another nice city from Vriesea, check out her Kebet. Also check out Silithar’s Djedu and a ton of new cities from our very own Cherub Baltic and Angel Jayhawk. Of particular note are Baltic’s Hetepsenusret (score: 49,519) and his “Progressive Sawu,” which has 3 versions of his city in different stages. Finally, check Severin’s Farafra Oasis, which was one of the new maps that Impressions released for the Eye of Ra contest.

In the Misc. Section is a Spreadsheet Calculator from Nero Would and Hawk 182’s Music Match utility that allows you to play the music and voice MP3 files from the game. I havn’t tested it so e-mail Hawk 182 with any questions.

Something fishy in the state of Bubastis

Rastatom bumped into soem trouble in Bubastis. His granaries are overflowing with fish, but his populace only wants to eat wheat. It seems the dreaded prefered food problem from Caesar 3 has made it’s way to Pharaoh.

Ironrod on Partial Company Transport

Just spotted this post on the official forums from Pharaoh’s designer Ironrodiken:

> Will transport ships pick up less than of 16 soldiers?

Yes, but…

If the company you’re trying to load is actively receiving replacements, it will not board a transport while the new soldiers are en route to their fort or to the rally location. Whenever the Barracks or Military Academy spits out a new soldier, the rest of his company has to wait for him to arrive.

For this reason, it’s best not to transport partial companies. If you must do so, don’t try to transport one that is actively being replenished.

GameSpot Reader Awards 1999

GameSpot have posted their Readers’ Awards for 1999. No sign of Pharaoh in any of the categories (where were you all ;)?), but quite a few of the winners are well-deserved.

Age of Kings came away with the “Best of Genre” award for Strategy, and the top 3 games in the overall poll are very impressive ones (Unreal Tournament beat out AoK by only 1%, with Planescape: Torment coming in 3rd).

Maxenkhemet thinks he’s probably the last person to find out about this lovely trick, but I don’t agree. It’s definitely news for me.

I have discovered an amazing fact: you can send ANY troops to fight a distant battle and win – as long as you have Seth’s blessing (to protect your soldiers in distant lands, etc…). In desperation (again… I guess that’s the best way to discover otherwise counter-intuitive phenomena) I sent a single company of archers to fight a “large” force of invaders. My thinking was that sure, I’ll lose the one company, but my Kingdom Rating will take a smaller hit than if I refused to send troops altogether. To my surprise, they were victorious! So, the next time I was asked for troops in an impossible situation (it happens a lot in Rowarty) I spent a couple of months sucking up to Seth, big time, until he gave me his blessing. Again I sent a single company of archers, and again, they were victorious.

War and Peace

Some new life was blown into a post that concerned the lack of bloodshed, or should I say ‘military challenge’ in most of the missions. Vriesea proposes a simple yet effective way to spice this up.

In the campaigns that request troops.
Refuse to send them.
It will liven up the game play

Why do I say effective? Well, first time round in some of the scenarios, I never mananged to send enough troops to win a battle, and then the next bunch would come knocking on my door. I’d loose a lot of troops, would fail to win in the next request and so forth…
A downward and very deadly spiral.

Monument score

Have you ever wondered about the way the monument scores work? If you have and have been puzzled when trying to find a linear explanation, there’s a good reason for that. As Ironrod replies:

The program scales these raw numbers to fit within the 1-100 range, taking burial provisions into account. Without that scaling, making the Big Honkin’ Pyramid with full grave goods equal 100 would value a small mastaba or obelisk with no grave goods at a fraction of one point. Defining that same minimal monument as being one point would make the top end of the scale come in way into the hundreds. To muddy things a bit more, I believe that the scale actually runs from around 5-100, since it would’ve been rather discouraging to players to have their first monument be worth 1 point

Osiris’ Flood Plain Follies

Farming on the flood plain can be an unpredictable business — unless you use this week’s cheat codes! Type in Life from Death and flood plain farms will harvest double. To destroy flood plain farms, type in Underworld. Please note: Osiris must be worshiped in your city for these cheats to work.

Wow, these cheat release could go on for months…

Nixon on Map Editor

Impressions’s Nixon made this lengthy post to the offical forum in response to some more whining about the map editor. It’s too long to post here in its entirety, so here’s a small snippet:

This is precisely why we do not give out any advanced dates here at this site. People complain that we aren’t giving them any information but it is exactly this type of situation that we are trying to avoid. Honestly, none of us here at Impressions know where go any date from. If you have a problem with that piece of information then I’d suggest taking it us with them. We certainly didn’t set any date here at this site. We know better than to do that.

Not much more I can add to that :).

There’s a poll with a difference in the Senet House. Little Raven is wondering what we are watching when we aren’t playing Pharaoh (or the SIMs or Baldur’s Gate, or…) Whether or not you are a couch-potato, you can tell him here.

The Game Help forum has a reminder for an interesting ‘glitch’ concerning the clearing of land and laying down roads. The best thing is that it seems possibe to do this at absolutely zero cost!

Last bit for today, there’s some Pre Olympic discussions going on. For those of you that remember the Caesar 3 Olympics, some of this will be old hat. For those of you that don’t, this was an event that had some 50 players form 20 odd countries competing in finishing maps and sending them in to the OC. The challenges differed from speed to elegance and included such inventive targets as “quickest one to kill all the wolves on the map”.

Did you know…?

There’s not much to tell today, but there’s an interesting tidbit of information tucked a way in a post on low fertitlity farming.

I’m playing Itjtawy, and decided to make use of the few tiny patches of meadow available. I have 9 grain farms sitting on a tiny strip of land, with about half the farms under 10% fertility (no room for irrigation).

These farms do me a great service. Even though they produce under 2000 grain per year, each farm produces a full load of straw with every harvest, regardless fo the fertility or staffing. With 18 loads of stray every year, I can more than provide for many cattle ranches (which produce more food than the farms themselves) and keep my brickworks fully stocked at all times, while leaving the floodplains open for the variety that keeps my people happy and healthy. They also provide a good source of employment.

E3 News

Anyone out there remember E3 last year? Well, according to this article over on AVault, E3 looks to be even bigger and better this year:

Organizers of the sixth annual E3 Expo, the world’s showcase for interactive entertainment and related products, today announced that the event has sold out in record time and will fill more exhibit space than ever before. E3 Expo 2000 will fill an unprecedented 548,000 square feet of space with more than 400 exhibitors, May 11-13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

E3 Expo 1999 served as the launching pad for about 1,900 new products, and this year’s event is expected to display a record number of technologies and next generation products for computers, video game consoles, and the Internet. Seminars will accompany the show. For more information, go here. E3 Expo 2000 is a trade event open to members of the interactive industry.

As with last year, at least 1 of our Angels should be there (perhaps it’ll be more, we’re not sure who can afford ot take the time off at the moment), covering whatever happens Impressions-wise ;).

A bunch of new cities added today. If you don’t see yours, don’t worry, it’s on its way soon! I have about 60 more sitting in my mailbox. I really apologize for such a long delay in updates. Day job plus night classes leaves little time lately. But all submitted cities will be up w/in the week. Check out Elizrs’ Hetepsenusret w/a score of 93,582! (a small bug in our script makes the score show up as 65,535; will be fixed soon). Also check out Vriesea’s Iken (Mirgissa) (first submission of this map!) and a very nice version of the Custom Menat Khufu by Josh.

Enhancement Pack news
February 22, 2000 3:00 PM EST posted a couple of days ago that the Pharaoh Enhancement Pack will be available this Friday. Well, I contacted the Marketing Weasel at Impressions, and he told me that it’s still in going through some rigorous quality assurance, and that it’ll hit the servers early next week.

Sorry chaps, don’t hold your breath for this Friday. Good news is that Impressions are aiming to release all the different language versions at the same time, thus avoiding the embarrasing situation as with C3, when the US patch came out 3 months before the other versions.

Then it must be another review. Oh, hang on a minute (Cue hushed whispering).


We have a winner in our daily competition “Who wants to take a quick course on how to spell?”…and the prize goes to: PC GameWorld for their misspelling of Pharaoh in their url. And their prize? It’s to have a bit of their review (84%, btw) quoted here on the PH main page:

Overall Pharaoh is a fairly enjoyable experience, especially if you have an interest in history (of course I don’t think playing the game would help you on your final exam in Ancient Egypt 101 if you’ve never taken a look at your textbook) that is dampened by the general repetitiveness of building cities. At the same time it is slightly disappointing because it doesn’t quite feel like a brand new game when compared with Caesar III. SimCity fans may not find it their cup of tea, yet when it comes to city building it’s a lot more fun dealing with angry gods, the clash of steel, and rabid hyenas than laying out power lines and working out deals for importing garbage in my opinion.

If you’ve bought Windows 2000, and have been having problems running certain games, then take a look at this page on the Microsoft site. Here’s why this might be a good idea:

Windows 2000 was specifically architected to enable customers to easily add additional application support after the product had shipped for general release. The February 2000 package is the first release of such additional application support and includes software compatibility updates for Windows 2000.

During product compatibility testing prior to release, Microsoft focused on the top volume business applications (thousands of applications run out-of-the-box). With that testing complete, as you can see below, we are now broadening our original focus and have addressed some minor compatibility issues with a few of the more popular home/entertainment/gaming applications.

No promises if Pharaoh will work any better, but it might be worth a try. Caesar III is 1 of the games on the list…

GA-Strategy review

Positivity is the word over at Gamers Alliance Strategy today. They’ve just slapped up their Pharaoh review (actually, it’s a Pharoah review according to the URL, but it sure looks like the same game ;)), and seem to be rather impressed by the whole thing. It scores right up there with the best, 92% being the final verdict.

Does it advance the genre?  Yes, it sets a new standard for city-building games.
Does it offer anything new?  Yes.
Does it offer a decent amount of gameplay?  Yes, you will be hooked for a long time.
Is the product relatively bug-free?  Yep, didn’t crash on me once.
Does the documentation thoroughly explain the game?  Yes.
Does this game have any features to keep it from getting outdated?  Yes, new scenarios on the official website.
Is the game worth the retail price?  Yes
Is the game FUN?  Yes

Well, to be honest, from Mediolanum, where I spent some time installing a bit of software at one of the Pay TV companies over there. Didn’t see much of the city, but I did spend some time introducing some of the Italians to Caesar 3.
One guess only as to what scenario I was (am still) playing…

While I was away, User Maat was kind enough to mail me some additional glyphs for the layout generator. I’ve included the Temple Complex and will spend some time on getting the tower and the walls to work.

Patch on Feb 25th?

During my several times daily browses of the official forum, I came across a message with a potentially interesting bit of information.

Sierra’s German site is reporting that patch for Pharaoh will be availble on 25th February. For the full news story click here, or read on if your German isn’t too good.

Here are the features announced:

  • An extensive mission editor, which you’ll be able to access via the Pharaoh front end menu, and which will allow you to make your own complex missions.
  • 20 new maps, available under the “Custom Missions” button.
  • More detailied information from Overseers.
  • Re-working of some campaign missions to prevent dead-end situations from occuring.
  • Workers will tell you why monuments aren’t progressing according to plan.
  • Problems regarding embarkation and disembarkation on and off transport ships will be fixed.

So, is this true? We await the official word on the subject…

Cheating with Hippos

Impressions have just released 2 new “cheats” for Pharaoh, both of which involve hippos. Should you want to see just how devastating they can be, then type Hippo Stomp to see a horde of them come flying through your lovely city.

Aternatively, for something a little more entertaining, type Side Show to see what they all love to do in their spare time…

These have, of course, been added to the PH cheats page. Thanks go out to veteran C3er Emperor Tomek for letting me know that I missed 1 of the cheats released last week :(.

Militarily challenged?

If you’re playing through the military campaign path, and encountering 1 or 2 difficulties, then you might be interested in this post by C3 veteran Vriesea. It’s an excellent run-down of all the things you need to keep an eye on. Here’s a quick snippet:

1. Seth doesn’t Suck – You really have to give Seth his due maybe more then people realize. Make sure you build that temple complex and begin throwing the festival in his honor. I usually build the temple complex just after introducing pottery when my population is able to handle the extra 50 workers. Once you have the temple complex , be presistant and constantly throw him festivals making sure there is always a lot of blue anhks. I have always used the common festival (cheaper) and have never had problems obtaining the necessary blessings. I have also noticed that if he promises to strike down the enemies during battle he keeps his promise. Another observation is that during several battles he has struck down the enemy more than once during the battle, which has been a life saver at times. This seems to indicated you can accumulate blessings from Seth and use them in the same battle (has anyone else observed this?). The key is to throw the festivals often and achieve Seth’s promises way before the actual battle takes place.

The ongoing discussion on the pros and cons of using storages yards for food distribution has found a new thread. Angel Thorfinn adds an intersting observation:

One other thing — IMO, it is a very good idea to have a SY set to accept 1/4 of your grown food so that it clears everyone off the floodplain. If they are taking to granaries, they calculate how many of the carts come in, and the rest stay put. If they are going to a SY, everyone comes, regardless of how much it will hold.

There’s an embarrasing thread in the Senet House. It’s got the revealing title “Duh, Duh, Duh“.

Quick note on the Glyph page…

I’ve had a few comments from people telling me the links to the images don’t work at all. It seems I missed a bit in the ‘manual’ 🙁

The first thing to do is select either “Local Dir” or “Forum Dir“. This will set the popup legend and the image button to work correctly.

On another note. The following images are not done yet:
– most of palaces and mansions
– a generic temple complex
– any thing to do with walls, towers and gatehouses

Then there’s a label or two still incorrect but I’m tryin gto get all of this fixed by Monday.

Withdrawal symptoms kicking in? If so, then here’s something that’ll ease your review fix:

Sequels are funny things. Some are reviled for not advancing upon the achievements of their forebears; others (see last month’s GTA 2 and Age Of Empires II) manage to get away with it. Caesar III (PCG 63, 87%) didn’t offer much new to its series, yet had great style and balancing. And, despite the different name and setting, Pharaoh is Caesar III’s direct descendant.

And it’s not half bad. But, and let’s get this clear, this is not Age Of Empires. It’s essentially a management game rather than anything to do with real-time strategy; more akin to SimCity than C&C. However, after playing Pharaoh for twelve hours or so, and you realise you still haven’t been introduced to half the resources and technologies, you’ll begin to wonder what you ever saw in SimCity and its ilk.

The score is 83%, and the reviewer is PC Gamer UK.

If you’re one of the people who’s been flooding the official forum with requests for cheats for the past several months, then today is the day you’ve been waiting for. In my email this morning was one from Itchy, with news that the official site had posted a bunch of cheats.

I’ve shoehorned them into our cheats page, in case you’re interested. 1 more thing – keep an ey out on future Fridays, because more cheats will be released then. Apparently, there are a few little stonkers in there ;).

The suggested solutions seem to have evolved from the last time I read about this problems, so yo umay want to have a look.

There’s also more on festivals and when to throw them. Taxation is another popular subject here. The question of this thread is: How high can I raise them?

It turns out that there will be a patch for Pharaoh, and it’ll most likely be coming along at the same time as the map editor, perhaps even as part of the same package. Don’t expect anything monumental, but the game should run smoother after it’s installed :).

Well, Angel ET Flavius had managed to reach new and dizzying heights well before anybody else did. I he was mountian climbing and each post got him a meter he’d now have past well above all the mountains in the Swiss Alps as well as the non-Alaskan Rocky Mountains.

There’s but one thing I can say: Onwards to the next Millenium.

Review time!

You know you’ve missed them – but now they’re back! I found another Pharaoh review a couple of days ago (but only managed to post it today…something to do with some stupid Brit forgetting his own news updating script password, or something ;)).

Anyway, this one’s by Electric Games, and shows more positivity. 8/10 is the number that matters, and here’s a little snippet (you know you love ’em ;)):

This is a very nice game for people who liked Caesar 3 and don’t mind playing it again, with a new culture slapped onto the engine. It has nice graphics and beautiful animation sequences. Modifications have been made to model Egyptian rather than Roman cities, which makes for very different gameplay in some areas. Overall, Pharaoh is a worthwhile experience, but it isn’t perfect—especially if you don’t have the patience for its long missions.

The Pyramid’s Causeway

It seems this dangly bit of the pyramid complex can cause a whole load of different problems. Here’s an overview and some of the resolutions.

Cherub Baltic has some interesting observations on bird hunters and why they will sometimes…just quit on you. It seems the game includes it’s own little bit of Darwinism.

The last word on how to pick a fight has not been spoken, yet. This thread dicusses some of teh finer points of Pharaoh’s Art of War.

Angel Thorfinn started a thread on the more obscure habits of the ancient Egyptians.
Or is this about teh not so ancient Egyptians…?

Last but not least, Assassin is out for another statistical challenge: What is the average Pharoah player like?. You can fill in the ‘form’here.
I wish him luck, because I don’t believe any Pharoah player is average. 😛

There’s a few thread on how to use the military in the Pharaoh game. From the observations made be various people, it seems your troops do better if you don’t try to tell them what to do. Here’s one and here’s the other.

Following on from the housing levels data sheet I posted earlier, I’ve now posted another sheet, which will let you know how many people can live in any particular house, and also how much tax they’ll pay (provided, of course, that they are regularly passed by a tax collector walker).

Any Ford workers out there?

If so, then you’re in for some good news:

The Ford Motor Company announced yesterday (3 February) that it’s giving free, high performance PCs to all 350,000 of its employees. The deal even throws in a colour printer and Internet access for just $5 a month.

It’s all in the name of promoting computer literacy and better office communication, according to Ford. Generally credited with the invention of the production line, the company has a good history of innovative work practices. Ford has also had the best labour relations in the car industry since 1986.

What!? More Strats!?

It’s blitz time in the PH strategy section. Today, I’ve added 2 more things. First off, in the housing layouts section, we have a couple of layouts in Excel format by forumer Max.

Also today, I’ve used Buggi’s FileEdit program to knock up this summary of housing levels. Hope you find ’em useful :).

Good ol’ Buggi has released his FileEdit utility, which will let you edit the .txt files that accompany the game a bit more safely. You can get it here, and here’s what it does:

Edit any Model and Figure file.
Backup feature in case you want to save the existing file.
Lots of errorchecking, but I’m still sure you can crash it somehow 🙂
Instantly see what your editing, will even work on saved games!
I added some Cheat codes too >:-)
Edit popular items such as speed, hit points, missile attack, range, desirability and housing requirements.
Or, make the game harder, as hard as you want, or as easy as you want.

Pharoah’s Quiz still going strong

Wendoolicus is unstoppable and so is the Pharaoh Quiz. It’s has now reached round nineteen and consists of three parts. The regular quiz, the Quick Question Quiz for those with less than 500 points and the Fun Quiz, open for all.

It seems most of the questions are answered, but there’s still a few points to be scored. So, if you aren’t playing already, head over there and give it a go.

Also, in the well-loved tradition of the Caesar 3 Community forum, the birthday thread for February has appeared.

Hmmm, it seems the reasons why I’m still in Baki are actually appreciated, so I guess I’ll spend even longer in Baki.

I’ve just added a couple more things to the strategy section. 1 is a Word version of the number-crunching post in the forums a while back by Nerdicus, and the other’s a little resume I’ve done of all the monuments in Pharaoh, how big they are, and what you need in order to be able to build them.

Probably nothing else from me today, unless my net connection seriously improves – it’s been a real dog these past 3 days. Can’t wait to get back to London… 🙁

The man we all know as Buggi has updated his FileEdit page with the latest things he’s working on. There’s also a teaser thingy you can download – I haven’t downloaded them, so I don’t know what they do…

It should be out either later this week or next week. Here’s a rundown of what the latest pre-release version does:

There’s an interesting thread out in the Senet House. Can you believe there are people out there that think there’s such a thing as having played too much Pharaoh?

There’s a housing block discussion going on in the Game Help forum, which, apart from showing you SenetEr’s favourite layout, will also show you several ways to display housing blocks on the forum.

There is also a nice little thread with suggestions for Impressions.

Just got the following from the Marketing Weasel about the upcoming Pharaoh map editor:

No news yet – just that it’s coming out this month. Part of the issue is coordinating a simultaneous ship for Europe and US – it’s coming out in English, German, French, and Swedish right off the bat, with other localizations happening shortly thereafter. We want to make sure that people understand that we’re committed to a world-wide audience and are thinking of our fans in every country, not just ours. – Alex
