New Poll Approaching

Using my scrying mirror told me this tidbit of news:
“A golden hamster comes winging in with questions”
I’m sure we’ll find out. Soon.

For our Caesar 3 fans on the Macintosh there will be a chat with Impressions hosted by Inside Mac Games tonight. The chat will start at 10 PM EST.
If you have a Mac and haven’t got the game yet, you’d better go there, as there’s a chance to win a copy.

As you might have gathered my DNS problems are solved and the news will, hopefully, be updated daily again.

In the forums the Mummy thread has risen again, as the movie is released in more and more countries outside the United States.
It seems HGS Main News Angel Alexander I will have a sneak preview. I hope he will actually post some of his thoughts in our forum. It might even help him to rise above Junior Member status… <G>

For the Love of Pharaoh

Still not sure whether I can connect. My DNS seems to have lost any interest in the Heaven Gaming Sites. I can only hope this is a temporary thing.
So, I try to save a bit of the time I spend in the office to update the page. I’ll see if I can find all of this at home, if not, I’ll have to look for an alternative.
Please bear with me…

As for the forum there’s a difference of opinion between Innovandora and myself on the possible use of the three utility buildings on the Number 1 screen shot. We seem to agree on the mudbrick maker, but the other two shops?
So, why don’t you go there and tell us your opinion?

I guess it’s a good thing that Angel Alexander I is currently back in Holland or Angel Reckless Rodent would have to help the two of us in our connection misery.

Gremlins eat connection

Well, I’m off to a flying start here, not. Crashlanded is probably more accurate. Stuck behind my PC with a setup that won’t allow me to connect to Pharaoh Heaven…and I’m sure I was here the other day. Luckily Angel Reckless Rodent was kind enough to upload this bit of doggerel.

So, what was it I wanted to say?

First I wanted to tell you all, that Reckless Rodent and myself will be alternating the news between Caesar 3 and Pharaoh Heaven, for the next coming months.

Apart from that, due to the new screenshots released by Sierra some intersting thoughts have been brought forward in the forum. If you want to add some of your wisdom, please do it here.

Pharaoh1.com gets a new look

Wow, what things happen while you’re asleep, eh? I logged on to the PH forum this morning to find a message from Innovandora saying that the official Pharaoh site run by Impressions (http://www.pharaoh1.com/). Sure enough, when I headed over there, I found my eyes assailed by a veritable visual treat. The old look has well and truly gone out the window, and has been replaced by all manner of hieroglyphics and a generally much more Egyptian look.   Don’t believe me? Check it out and see for yourselves.

To christen the new look, Impressions churned out 3 new screenshots, which they placed in their “Sneak Peek” section. They’re pretty interesting actually…certainly not groundbreaking but at least they show up a couple of things not pictured in the alpha screenshots which have hitherto been released. The most notable bit is the Sphinx, which has undergone a couple of changed since it was shown in the first ever mock-up screenshot. Also, do I detect the presence of a fort in one of the shots too..? Comments can be placed here.

But that’s not all. Remember the .mp3 files of the C3 music which were released a while back? Well it looks like the same thing is happening for Pharaoh, only much earlier in the game’s development. The first Pharaoh .mp3 hit the market (or should that be bazaar) today. For those of you wanting to download it, right click on this no longer working link and choose “save target as” (in IE). Very mysterious IMO.   Good stuff!

Chat log posted

Earlier today, Sierra posted a log of last Thursday’s chat between Impressions and the general public. I got permissions from them (thanks guys) to post it here at Pharaoh Heaven, thereby giving me the chance to open up a brand new section. The Chat Archive is now live – I’ll be posting the transcripts of this and all future chats as they take place and the logs become available. Ultimately, it’ll be a source of information for people wanting to find out all there is to know about Pharaoh, and will also provide an interesting reference point to see how the game changed during its development. For now, there’s only the one chat log present, and you can comment about it here in the forum.

Not to be outdone, Angel Jayhawk posted another pic of Egypt in the forum. This time, it’s a pic of the sacred lake at Karnak. Get the full version here if you’re interested in finding out a bit more (and who wouldn’t be?).

Et Flavius to the rescue

Tech dude Cherub Et Flavius from Caesar III Heaven has been working hard over the past little while to see if he can sort out the problems that some of you out there have been having viewing the QuickTime movies at the official Pharaoh site. Here’s his latest statement on the matter:

Just a clarification, QT will run on a pretty minimal computer. I loaded up a 166MMX, with QT 4.0, made sure DirectX was enabled, and used their player to view the Pharaoh 1 infomovie. Not a hitch, played the high bandwidth perfectly..now on to laptops. I need to apologize for jumping on named video cards…totally my fault for not ‘checking’ their respective setups.

The QuickTime downloads are a pain…but 4.0 offers a update utility that will make future needs less cumbersome. Especially now that the Mac has broken into the scene with C3.

Check out the rest of what he has to say here.

Still no sign of the chat log from last Thursday appearing on Pharaoh1.com. I’ll keep chasing them until they post it – I’m eager to see what happened there too. The bit in the forum about it really whetted the appetite!

Chat follow-up

The chat I mentioned in my last news update (17th June) did indeed take place as per the schedule and it seems like I missed a bit of a treat.   Still, our intrepid forumers don’t let too much slip by here at Heaven. One of our regulars, RSC, reported back with some very interesting comments:

Gods

-Some of them will now be able to empower their priest with additional bonuses if they’re worshipped properly

-Each of the main gods has a Large Temple that you can build, each Large Temple has two upgrades dedicated to lesser gods. These upgrades have game effects

-Not every god is represented in every scenario, and some cities will have a ‘patron deity’ (I think we already knew this)

-you have to balance your patron deity against minor deities, too, and some cities wiil have more than one patron deity.

-There are many more things that the gods will do, both good and bad.

-The gods are more political then they were in C3, they are less inclined to share the devotion of the people

Economic Model

-More raw materials/finished goods and resources than C3; More cities to trade with

-Resources are more precious, and some commodities take 2 raw materials

-More things to mine; flax, barley, and chckpeas (??) to farm; reeds for papyrus can be gathered, and you can hunt

-Some things must go through 2 workshops before reaching the final product

-Wheat farms produce 2 resources

Micromanagment

-warehouse and grainary controls have been refined; bazaars added

-Deeper control, but notmore complicated

-Walker behavior improved; more controls for more advanced players

Misc. Quotes from the Discussion

“You will still be omnipresent, although you will have a seat of power, and a seat of wealth, both of which are vulnerable.”
“Money, which is natually very important, is kept in several buildings throught town, and they can be robbed…”

“Also, some buildings that produce access walkers require resources to operate”

“You have the option of continuing to play any city after you have completed the objectives. There is also a City Construction Kit included with the game”

“You are also able to create your own maps and create your own scenarios”

“You’ll have multiple difficulty levels, you’ll be able to turn off god effects…etc.”

“…even create a chain of events scenario…”

“The advisors have bee refined based on what we learned from Caesar III, but they will appear much the same in Pharaoh. Most of the changes are in the code, making sure their advice is even more specific and appropriate to your situation…And in general the game provides more feedback then in C3 so you will be less reliant upon your advisors”

Quotes on monument building

“For example, a large monument may require 2 different types of stone, carpenters, woode, grave goods, jewelry, etc”

“There are different sized pyramids. The sphinx starts out as a hunk of stone that you slowly refine over time”

You see the pyramids go up stone by stone!!

“There is some flexibiltiy as to which monuments (and how many of each) you can build” How many? Up to three per scenario!! nice!

Wow, if all that has whetted your appetite (and if it hasn’t, why?), then you can read further comments and post your follow-ups here in the forum. For those of you that missed it (myself included), then there’s some good news – I am reliably informed that the chat log will be posted at some point in the very near future.

Today is the day

The chat mentioned by Impressions in the newsletter is going to be happening later on today. Should certainly be worth going if you get the chance. For those of you with IRC, then just connect to chat.annex.com in room #Impressions. If you haven’t got IRC, then don’t worry, as you can access the chat via your web browser at http://www.annexcafe.com/chat/impressions. Let us know afterwards in the Pharaoh Heaven forum what was brought up and whether you thought it a useful exercise. Hopefully, I’ll be putting up a log of the chat in good time.

I’ve posted a thread in the forum asking if any of you have had problem viewing the movies that were released this week on the official site. Let us know if you’ve been having problems, because if there are enough of us, then we may be able to get Impressions to issue the movies in a more suitable format (.avi or .mpg). Caesar III Heaven’s tech Cherub, Et Flavius, has just posted the following:

To resolve conflicts with QuickTime, a long-time favourite of Sierra, you need to make sure that Windows mediaplayer, and G2, aren’t automatically assuming the task. When I downloaded the movies I already had QT, so I don’t know if all these problems are created in the ‘double’ whammy you get when you have to acquire a player at the same time you downloaded the movie. Makes a lot of changes to your system files, so technically speaking, it’s a matter of knowing what kind of pruning and re-write was done to get everything else that does similar tasks, in the non-conflict mode.

As usual, we shall keep you informed.

Pharaoh movie

Here’s something I meant to mention yesterday, but had a senior moment and forgot about. If you read the newsletter, then you’ll already know about this, but if you didn’t, then this will be news to you. Over at the official Pharaoh site, there are 3 Pharaoh movies for you to check out. They were shown at E3, and were apparently eagerly lapped up by the press. They are in .mov format, so you’ll need to get the QuickTime plugin. Hope you have more luck than I did – I can’t get QT or any other .mov viewer to work on my current system, so haven’t seen the films yet. Here’s hoping I have better luck back in London. On the subject of movies, another of the site I’m working on at the moment, Tzar Heaven, has an exclusive movie – the very first of its kind – showing just how great Tzar will be. Well worth a look, I’d say.

Ooh, take a look at that. It can only be a pic from Angel Jayhawk, posted for your enjoyment in the forum. This one’s a photo of a couple of statues of Ramesses the Great which the hawk found at Luxor. Check out the full version and a bit of background on Ramesses here.

A bit of a first for Pharaoh Heaven today – there are (as I’m sure the observant amongst you will have noticed) two polls gracing the right hand side of this page. Why not take a moment to cast your vote and let us all know how you feel?

Our august hosts, Gamestats, are currently hosting a beta signup thingy for a Microsoft game. You will be able to sign up from Friday this week. To get all the information, then pop over here.

They said it would never happen…

But it has! The Pharaoh Newsletter has finally appeared! And it’s a pretty useful resource as well. Missed it? Don’t be downbeat – you can read it right here at Pharaoh Heaven. Just click here to get to the new Newsletter Archive. However, I’ll pick out the main headlines here.

The most important thing which was announced in the newsletter was an upcoming chat with the designers. Here are the details:

Join us for a question and answer session with the Pharaoh development team this Thursday, June 17, at 7pm EST. You can participate in this online press and fan conference using either an IRC client or your web browser. In IRC, connect to chat.annex.com in room #Impressions. Using your web browser, connect to http://www.annexcafe.com/chat/impressions

I probably won’t be there – it’s a bit late for us poor European folk. However, I’ve been told that a transcript of the chat will be posted on the official site, and I’ll post a copy here at PH, so you won’t miss out on any of the details. Be warned, though…it’s a mainly press-oriented event – they will get priority when it comes to asking the questions, but who knows, perhaps some of the fans will be able to get a question in at the end. I’ve also been informed that Impressions are considering holding chats earlier in the day for the benefit of us folks across the Atlantic, so I’ll keep you posted on that.

There was also talk of a potential release date:

Pharaoh is slated to ship in October of 1999. If you want to make sure your local store has plenty on hand when it comes out, talk to the manager and let him or her know how excited you are about this product. This will help them determine how many copies of Pharaoh they need to order.

So, now we know. October’s the target.   There’s a load more stuff in the newsletter, so you can either check it out here or get there via the Newsletter Archive.

I’ve been playing around with a couple of the sections here at Pharaoh Heaven in order to make them more informative and helpful.   The first bit to get the new look is the Sneak Peek section, so check that out and let me know if there’s anything I’ve missed.

Another Pharaoh Preview

This one has been posted in the forum for quite a while now, but I thought I’d bring it out to the news page since today’s pretty quiet. It’s at GamersCentral, and was posted on 20/5/99, so it can encompass the new information released at E3. Check it out here, and then post your thoughts here.

Something for our European visitors who have cable and can get the Discovery Channel here. It’s a bit of an Egypt night tonight – here’s the schedule (all times Central European Time)

22:00 CET Cleopatra
23:00 CET Tutankhamen’s Curse
24:00 CET Mystery of the Pyramids.

Thanks go out to Angel Jayhawk for spotting that one.

Have you seen these buildings?

Be warned, there are some unidentified buildings on the loose in ancient Egypt. We know not what functions these constructions perform, and they may well be dangerous. All I can say is, take a look at the following picture, make a note of the letters, and then post here what you think each of the buildings is. Next week we shall hear from Impressions which guesses were correct.

And now, from one public service announcement to another. Heaven’s Gaming Sites (of which Pharaoh Heaven is a part) is proud to announce the opening of Heaven’s Marketplace.   “Eh?” I hear you cry, “What’s Heaven’s Marketplace?”. Well, it’s the place to be to get anything HGS-related you like. Currently we have some rather natty t-shirts available, but we might expand our range if the demand is there.

And now for another HGS-related announcement. Age of Empires Heaven is sponsoring a design contest to celebrate the passing of AOE I and heralding the arrival of AOE II. Click on the pic to find out more.

There’s also a brand new contest at our hosts Gamestats. This one gives you a chance to win all sorts of Westwood-related goodies. Once again, the link behind the pic tells the story.

Composite time!

No, I haven’t gone all Age of Empires on you and started talking about composite bowmen or something. Read on…

This is what I’m talking about. Angel Jayhawk was sufficiently intrigued by the 8 screenshots that we received a couple of days ago, all of which you will probably now have seen, to see if they all came from the same map. Well, it looks like they did, as is clearly demonstrated in this not so little composite .jpg file that he put together. The 4 going together diagonally at the bottom are especially enlightening, as it gives you the first chance to “zoom” across a map as you would in the game. Be warned, however, this picture is by no means small. It’s nearly 1MB is size, so will take quite a while to display. While you’re waiting, you could even have a little browse round the forum…

Any more for any more?

I hope you like the screenshots that I posted yesterday. If so, then you’re in for a bit of a treat today, as the other 4 (and the better ones of the set I think) are making an appearance. Here we go…

This is the first one, and shows some more expensive housing. This pic makes it clear that wells will evolve, and very nice they look too. You’re all bound to find a load of stuff in here, so you’re bound to have some comments. If so, then go ahead and post them here.

Warning: Pyramid under construction. This pic expands on the stuff shown in one of Spineman’s E3 photos, namely how the pyramids in Pharaoh will be put together. Seems like Impressions are going on the “ramp” theory. Comments about this one here please.

This one shows the same pyramid, but also some of the sort of stuff that you’ll need to build around it – warehouses for stone, statues to the gods etc. As always, comments are valued, so express them here.

Temples are the order of the day here. This one’s clearly to Sobek, the crocodile god, as can be seen by the statues placed around it. But what’s that pink building behind it..? Any ideas? Tell us here!

More screenshots!!!

But these are no ordinary screenshots. Oh no, not at all, these are Pharaoh Heaven exclusive screenshots, so you won’t see them anywhere else on the Net. There’s a total of 8, so there’s plenty to keep you going! I’ll post 4 today and then the other 4 tomorrow…

Here’s the first one, showing more of the farmland that will be so important in Pharaoh. There are also a couple of neat little buildings next to the farmland, and I’m sure you’ll figure out what they are.   Comments about this shot may be posted here.

Immigrants will clearly still exist in Pharaoh, as this screenshot clearly shows. These chaps first appeared in the first mockup screenshot (the Sphinx), and I initially thought they were cart-pushers. However, this pic proves once and for all that their are, in fact, immigrants. Comments can be posted here.

Here’s another waterfront pic, and shows what seems to be a cedar fishing boat heading out to fish the Nile. However, perhaps of greater interest is the goods in the warehouses… Anyway, if you have any comments, go ahead and post them here.

This pic proves that the building with the holes in it is indeed a granary – you can see a couple of the holes in the building on the right stuffed full with wheat. As always, we welcome your comments – post them here!

Phew! That’s enough for today – the other four exclusive shots will make their grand entrance tomorrow! See you then!

Want to learn more about the Pharaohs?

If you do, then today’s your lucky day. I received my books about ancient Egypt in the mail this morning, and spent the day getting a new section ready here on Pharaoh Heaven.

Ok, so the history section here at Pharaoh Heaven might still only be in its infancy (there are only so many hours in the day, after all), but you can still brush up on your Egyptian history. Click here to check out a list of all the Pharaohs who ruled during the periods covered by the game (the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms). I certainly never realised that there was so much intrigue in ancient Egypt – I’d always seen it as something of a serene golden age exemplified by the great construction works like the pyramids. Well, peaceful is certainly not the word to describe certain periods of Egyptian history, and I for one will be really interested to see how Impressions deal with the Intermediate periods which crop up from time to time. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Then you need to read about the Pharaohs!

New poll

But I’m sure you didn’t need me to tell you that – it’s plain for all to see that a brand new poll graces Pharaoh’s Court today. Using an idea by Cherub Et Flavius from Caesar III Heaven, this week’s (perhaps the next 2 weeks’) poll wants to find out your opinion of demos. Are they in invaluable tool in the decision making process when it comes to buying a game or leaving it on the shelf, or are they merely bug-ridded, download-intensive programs that don’t really serve any purpose and which the developers shouldn’t waste their time on? Let us know what you think! Oh, and I’m also on the lookout for some new ideas for future polls. So, if you’ve got a bright idea, then let us know. Who know, you might get your name carved forever in the annals of Pharaoh’s Court register…

What’s going on in the forum at the moment?   Well, the hot topic right now is a discussion about the merits of an extended scenario editor. Here’s a snippet:

1. The ability to choose freely which cities you want to trade with.

2. The ability to put down buildings so you could create scenarios like Carthago (C3 military career path) without having to use utilities like those created by Dragon2.

3. An opportunity to include the description in the scen itself – in C3, you couldn’t write a piece describing the scen unless you wrote a .txt file and included it w/ the scen. Not good, IMO.

4. The ability to edit the graphics? Not too sure about this one, but it’s something that should be discussed

5. Perhaps most of all, we need a career editor!! It’s all very well being able to build up individual scenarios and package them in the same .zip file as you did w/ C3, but it’d be much better if you could put them together and release them as a career file, much along the lines of AoE. IMO that would increase the replayability value of Pharaoh, and also lay the route open for Sierra to release an expansion pack somewhere down the line.

If you want to post critiques and comments on the above, then you can do so here.

Something for the weekend, sir?

That’s the question that Angel Jayhawk is asking in the forum. Not content with bringing us the best pics of Egypt to be found anywhere on the Internet, he’s bringing us the best in terms of links too. Here, you’ll find all the information you could ever want about ancient Egypt. Thanks, Jayhawk! And you’re doing all this on a wee 14.4 modem too…

Speaking of something for the weekend, how about something that’ll change your life forever? How about working for Impressions, the guys responsible for bringing us the wonders that are Caesar II and Pharaoh (and Lords of the Realm 2 which, although it’s a few years old, is currently getting my attention…pesky castles). Yup, they’re looking for and experienced Senior Game Designer. If you’re interested and reckon that you’ve got what it takes to be a part of the hottest game development company in the world, then you can apply here. Good luck!

Some general HGS news here. If you are a regular visitor to all the sites under the “Heaven’s Gaming Sites” banner, then you’ll know that, in the last couple of days, I became co-webmaster of Tzar Heaven to help out busy old Angel Hamlet, and am now the head newswriter over there. Well, as soon as I arrived, things started to happen (nothing to do with me, of course<g>). Tzar now has a publisher!! Wahay! Head over to Tzar Heaven to find out its identity!

Get squawky

That slide scanner belonging to Angel Jayhawk is sure getting some use at the moment…he only just posted one picture a couple of days ago, and today another one appeared in the forum. Here it is, along with his comments:

This is a picture of a bust of Tut-Ankh-Amun as I found it in Karnak. Tut is of course world famous for his wonderfully intact crypt, with the beautiful mask and everything. Even the four canoptic jars on the front page seem to be the ones taken from his grave.

Curiously enough Tut wasn’t much of a Pharaoh, a boy-king brought to power to erase Akhen-Aton’s blasphemy and killed after only a short reign.

Still the statue, even lacking it’s nose, is truly stunning.

So what about some site news? Well, I spent the entire afternoon today standardising the links and other stuff on every page of the site, and while I was doing this I updated the Sneak Peek section to take account of all the new screenshots which appeared last week. So, feel free to take a peek<g>. I’m also currently testing something out for this page, and the feedback I’ve got on it so far from fellow HGS chaps has been very positive. I won’t mention any more about that for the moment, but suffice it to say that it’ll make navigating the site a whole lot easier. Check back every day to see when I’ll get it all up and running!

Competition time

There are a couple of competitions going around at the moment which I thought you might be interested to hear about. First off, if you enjoy (like me) playing Civilisation: Call To Power, then you’ll be interested in the competition that our fellow GameStats affiliate Apolyton is running at the moment. If you enter here, you can win some really cool Civ: CTP-related stuff. Worth a try, I’d say!

Speaking of Gamestats, they’ve got a brand new competition this week too. At the moment they’re giving you lucky, lucky people the chance to win a copy of TriBond. Not only that, it’s autographed by its creator too! Cool, eh? If that grabs your fancy, then you can enter the compy here. Good luck!

Forum roundup

It’s been a while since I’ve done a roundup of everything that’s happening in the forum, what with all the E3 pics and screenshots and everything else. Still, I suspect that you didn’t really mind, eh;)?

In one topic, Innovandora has given us a release date strategy which we’d all love to see put into action. Here’s a wee excerpt:

As you already know the timing of a games general market release is a BIG DEAL. So do you feel that we might be looking for PHARAOH to emerge in a lull where it can make the biggest splash. I think that August is still a good bet…and early September because of school starts, and pocket money is more available at this time. After this, the only major money window is Christmas, where the competition is really fierce especially in the software area.

Unlike Hollywood movies, software houses can’t really afford to sit on developed products to schedule perfectly timed releases. The instant you stop working on a product it starts its countdown into obsolescence –nor do these guys have large cash reserves to float on. Look at how Half-life’s initial version was completely scrapped becuase it fell behind the graphical curve –only Microsoft Millionaires could afford to write off their first two years of development without a penny of revenue and still keep their company afloat.

Any comments or thoughts you have, as well as the full piece by Innvoandora, can be found here. Another hot topic at the moment was started by Cherub Onoculator from Caesar III Heaven, who wonders about what sort of ritual we might expect in Pharaoh:

I just wanted to know. ’cause I think the ancient Egyptians use to do that right? I saw a show where they had dozens and dozens of scraficial alters made for bulls and monkeys.

Also will you be able to tame wild animals? Maybe in a sort of ranch? maybe monkeys and zebras or aligators? You could even use the aligators to fight your enemies.

Thoughts and comments can be posted here.
