After Actium, circa 30BC to 20BC
Egypt has fallen. Cleopatra VII Philaphator and Marc Antony have both been laid to waste. Now, a massive and confused empire remains in the distant south-west corner of the known Roman world. You, the renowned Emperor Augustus (formerly Octavius), have returned to your most glorious treasure, Egypt, and set about renovating the mighty city of Alexandria...
This is a post-Egyptian era scenario where you, Emperor Augustus, plays as the mighty Romans who have returned to Alexandria to set about completing Alexander the Great's distant dream of making Alexandria a true marvel of the known world. The main thouroughfares remain, and have already been beautified by your City Design advisor. The Great Library, Caesareum and Pharos Lighthouse remain, and all that remains to be done is transfigure the riot-battered city of the Ptolemies into a symbol of Roman might in the eastern half of the Roman Empire.
Please note that this a SAV file as I have pre-placed some buildings and monuments, and you will have to put it into the family name of 'Emperor Augustus' and load it as a saved game, not as a raw custom scenario. To do this, go to your SAVE folder in your Pharaoh directory and create a folder named 'Emperor Augustus' along with all the rest of your other family name folders. Then, copy the 'After Actium.sav' file and accompanying text file into there, load Pharaoh/Cleopatra and you should find your new family name in the family reception screen. Select 'Emperor Augustus,' then load 'After Actium' in the saved games screen.
PLEASE READ THE TEXT BELOW, OR ELSE COPY TO MICROSOFT WORD OR SOME OTHER TEXT PROGRAM. VITAL INFORMATION IS CONTAINED HERE!
"AFTER ACTIUM
With the triumphant defeat of Queen Cleopatra VII and the traitorus Roman commander Marc Antony at Actium came the final demise of the Egyptian Empire. You, the esteemed Emperor Octavius, has risen to become the all-powerful and sole ruler of the mighty Roman Empire, which is now the single supreme power of the Mediterranean following the defeat of Egypt. All of Rome rejoices!
However, there now exists a kingless and defeated nation in the east: Egypt. You, like the great Julius Caesar before you, have noticed the economic and military value of Egypt.
It has been several years since you did any major business in Egypt; the great city of Alexandria is still mayored by Egyptian noblemen and you have come to realise that you have left Egypt's vast wealth and richness go to waste. Without the imperial forces of Rome constantly at work in Alexandria and her sister cities, Egypt might as well be independant again.
Leave Rome, the glorious heart of our mighty and expansive empire, and finish what the ill-fated Julius Caesar started some five decades ago in Alexandria. You will have much work to do, as many riots and rebellions have ravaged the city. The magnificent Great Library, and what is left of her valuable works, still stands, somewhat ravaged by the hand of man. The mighty Caesareum is still with us, as is the unique Pharos Lighthouse.
But don't be swayed by what remains; for besides these three monuments there remains little of the past glory of Alexandria. Perhaps the city was better off with Queen Cleopatra, but now you have decided to make a change to things.
First and foremost, restore Alexandria to the honour of being the centre of trade, commerce and culture in the eastern half of our Empire. Re-establish the shipyards and harbours in the name of Rome, bearing in mind that Alexandria will have to facilitate all major trade and commercial negotiations in her half of the world.
Secondly, bring back wealthy citizens to the city by making city conditions suitable enough for at least five Palatial Estates. In essence, what we are about to do is a major transformation of Alexandria into one of the mightiest and most glorious cities in the known world! Part of this task has already been completed by your foreign affairs advisor, who has taken the liberty to re-beautify and upgrade the two main thouroughfares of the city; the Canopic Street which runs the east-west axis of the city, and the Main Street which runs the north-south axis of the city from Cape Lochios in the north to Lake Mariut in the south. Also, the old city walls have been left behind as city engineers believe that they are still in good condition.
However, the rest of Egypt is still on bad terms with Rome and the Roman-Egyptian communities of Alexandria and her sister cities. Thus, many cities will rise up and rebel without realising that they are trying to take on all the might of Rome, which is almost certainly going to bring them to their demise. To protect against early rebellions and riots your most esteemed Praetorian Guards have joined you, three whole legions in all. To fully secure the city, however, you will have to rebuild the devastated remains of the Alexandrian Army. As you should already know, much of it was devastated in a desperate attempt by Queen Cleopatra and Marc Antony to defend Alexandria and Egypt from her ill-fated demise, and what remained soon fled when Rome took over.
Being the Emperor of the greatest civilisation on Earth, the Senate back in Rome has generously agreed to allow you a very fortunate annual stipend to aid in the reconstruction and re-development of Alexandria. However, seeing that your task has been made somewhat a little simpler, the Senate expects you to respond to the Empire's requests in a timely fashion. Fail to do so and Rome may begin to see your demise.
Good Luck, Emperato!
