Gemmes Island

Difficulty: Very Easy

Pharaoh Teti, ruler over all lower Egypt, have a terrible lack of gems and copper. They refuse to continue buying expensive jewellery and weapons from their jealous Mediterranean neighbours who believe the Egyptian pharaohs depend on them. He has therefore decided to put in place a manufacturing industry, for those commodities desired by the people, for their jewellery cases.
Cyprus, a friend of the Egyptians, had given the Egyptians a couple of years ago a small island, with rich mineral deposits. Unfortunately, this island is very difficult to mine because there are many marshes and few places to place docks. This island also rich in granite and limestone.
you are the newly promoted governor. And the pharaoh, aware of the existence of this small island, asks you to prove your skills at this small forgotten piece of land! He asks you to create an important, prosperous city to show the power of Egypt to all the traders and peoples of the Mediterranean.
This city has to be a strong place in the commerce of east the Mediterranean.
Cyprus is still a poor island, and it wont help you except a few of raw materials.
Not a single event will disturb you from your rise towards victory. You will simply have to manage the open space and the transport of merchandises the best you can…

Gemmes Island is a somewhat decently playable scenario. The nice map, vast amount of world trade spots, and interesting setting make for a fun game. It's quite easy thanks to an over-abundance of resources, but it finds ways to make the game somewhat challenging and certainly worth a play. The main problem with this is the lack of any real events, which make the game quite dull. Really, this would be a 3 if the author put a bit more care into actual triggerings of events.

Balance: 3
The actual game is very easy to start off with because of the over-abundance of natural resources that you can trade off to multiple cities. There is a catch however---you have limited dock space. I found it incredibly difficult towards the end of the game, trying to import ALL of my food while still being able to export resources. Housing blocks faded in and out of poverty constantly bercause they were not getting their food fast enough. The balance here is barely good enough.

Creativity: 3
The author made this quite a creative map in terms of looks and setting, but he didn't want to bother with events... While the latter is very important, the author does the first part very well, putting this at a 3.

Map Design: 5
I don't really think I could ask for a better map---this is pretty good. It looks fairly unique, natural, and is very fun to build on. This map is superb.

Story/Instructions: 4
Very good story-line and instructions, reading it above. It's interesting and unique enough for a 4.

Additional Comments: Fairly well done. Ifit weren't for the lack of any actual events, this could be quite good. It's already certainly worth at least one play or two for the typical Pharaoh player.

Playability: 5
Map is playable/winnable without any issues attaining win conditions

Balance: 3
Without concern for money, wars, or resources through trade, there isn't much to challenge you in this mission. With a few events added, the difficulty would rise and make this a more balanced mission.

Creativity: 2
Zero events make this map play more like a sandbox. Having to strictly import food makes managing population a big more tricky

Map Design: 5
Very unique design making docks funnel to one area. The small land mass is a challenge to fit 4500 population, monuments, and industry.

Story/Instructions: 5
Map and story mesh well and make you feel like you are on that island north of Egypt

Additional Comments:
Likely a one play through sort of mission. Sandbox nature of the map makes for one forgettable, dare I say boring experience. No issues completing this map on normal difficulty.
