Mission briefing
The traditional way of building cities in Egypt has been to find a suitable piece of countryside with a ready supply of food, some raw materials and to build a city there, trading for the goods you need to improve the city.
This approach has been exhausted and Econhotep, one of Pharaoh's chief advisors, is now advocating a new idea, to build cities where there are no resources at all, but food and every raw material is available by import.
People skilled in making pottery, beer, linen, papyrus and jewellery would be needed for such a city. It would become known as a centre, or focal point, for all the great Egyptian crafts.
To enable the economy to grow, of course, Econhotep has suggested there should be an export opportunity for each manufactured good.
Pharaoh is interested in the idea, but he acknowledges it will be hard. He wants the city to represent all that is best in an Egyptian city, its culture, prosperity, respect for Pharaoh himself and its economy.
Now all he needs is someone to come along who would like to build this type of city. And you have volunteered...
Competition criteria
Your competition entry should be a saved game in December AD4. Please ensure there is sufficient time to pause your saved game and view it (at 10% speed) before the turn of the year.
The minimum criterion that your saved game competition entry should meet is:
- Culture Rating 60
Please note that the Overseer of Ratings page shows a requirement of 99 Stately Manors. This large number of stately manors has been put in solely to block premature winning when all the other ratings are achieved. You are not expected to achieve this number of stately manors.
Winning criteria
WC1: The mathematical total of the following items:
- Prosperity Rating, plus..
- Kingdom Rating, plus..
- Money in the city vaults divided by 1000 (one thousand) (the whole number only to count)
WC2: The number of Stately Manors in your saved game competition entry (as recorded by the Overseer of Ratings).
The second criterion is only applicable if the first criterion produces a tie.
Please note the following for calculation of WC1:
The points score for the money in the city vaults will be calculated thus:
Money in the vaults at the time of your save = 5347 db.
Divide by 1000 = 5.347
Only the whole number to count, score = 5
So, for example, an entry with the following:
Prosperity Rating: 80
Kingdom Rating: 65
Money: 5347db (Score (as above): 5)
would have a mathematical total of 80 + 65 + 5 = 150 for WC1
How to Enter
You should name your entry as follows:
Your name-the name of the game-the level of difficulty
So, for example, my entry for this game would be:
Granite Q-Craftcentre-Hard
and then zip it, using the same naming convention.
Attach this save to an email and send it to craftcentre@herb.freeserve.co.uk to arrive no later than 12 midnight 31st May 2003, US Eastern Time, ET(US) (again, that's Heaven Games 'forum' time).
Designers' Advice
The start date for this game is 0 AD. You must submit a game saved in December AD 4. Remember to make a manual save in December of every year. You will get a message informing you of an increase in the price of granite (which plays no part in the game) as a reminder to make these saves.
There are no food supplies or raw materials available in this city. When you click the Industrial Structures tab, you will still see the "raw materials" button. When you click this, because there are no raw materials, it will simply disappear.
In this game you will receive requests for papyrus, beer, linen and game meat, in that order. Compliance within the stated timescale will make a new trade route available and give a rise in Kingdom Rating. Being late results in a small increase in Kingdom Rating; failing to meet a request results in a drop in Kingdom Rating.
As is usual in competitions, this game has been programmed so that events which happen as a direct result of some action (for example a trade route becoming available after meeting a request) have been set to occur at a fixed time after compliance. Some players, however, seem to observe some variation in these set timings, for which there appears to be no directly attributable reason.
Have fun!!
