Download Problems Explained
ome of you may have been experiencing problems trying to download cities from the downloads section here at PH. This is almost certainly down to some new security measures we've installed recently. Here's Angel Zen's statement on the matter, since he'll be able to explain it much better than I could:

You might have problems downloading the files if you meet one of the following conditions:

1.) You use a public proxy to surf our sites.
2.) You use software that blocks out ads.
3.) You use a third-party downloading agent.
4.) You're trying to download our sites with a web site copier.

I don't know where the username/password request comes in. I'll look, but chances are it's not us asking for it (It might be an in-between proxy, or incorrect configuration on your end.)

*HOWEVER*

If you visit http://www.heavengames.com/getinfo.php and email me the info, I can diagnose the problem further.

Please include the contents of that page, as well as your forum name, and, if possible, a URL to the page that's giving you the error - in the email. Thanks.

-Zen

Feast Or Famine?
hat's the question being asked by Cherub Baltic in his latest competition map, which was released today. To encourage you to follow that link to see what's going on, here's what it's all about:

Through your family's generations of service, you have been awarded the title of Chancellor. With Egypt at peace and prosperous, you would like to return to the land of your fathers and build a new settlement there.

But Pharaoh has other ideas. He would like to see you as a governor of mighty trade city. The land of your ancestors has few available resources, barely enough to sustain a city, let alone inspire trade with distant cities. But, because of your dedication and enthusiasm, Pharaoh will grant your request on one condition... you must comply with all his requests, feed a decent city and stockpile enough food to show that a larger population can be supported from local sources.

Good luck!

Is that Thunder I hear rumbling?
ertainly seem like it - I just received this little press release from AOKH's Angel Thunder (what an appropriate name for one in the clouds ):

Communication is a very important part of online gaming, whether you're storming a base in a FPS or helping an ally deal with an enemy attack in a RTS game. We've put the new Sidewinder Game Voice (www.gamevoice.com) through its paces, testing its chat and voice command functions in gaming situations, and comparing it to some of the free chat programs already made popular by gamers. You can find our review at: http://aok.heavengames.com/gamevoice/gv1.shtml

FileEdit2 Out
hanks to Sinuhe for pointing out to me that Buggi has released the second iteration of his FileEdit program, which now includes support for Cleopatra.

FileEdit lets you mess around with the .txt files which make Pharaoh and Cleo tick with a minimum of hassle and danger. Well worth a look if you want to pay less for your Zoos .

Housing Table
Number-cruncher extraordinaire Nero Would has gone and done it again! This time, he's gone through housing with a fine-toothed comb and come up with all sorts of information. Well worth a look for anyone who wants to find out more about Pharaoh's game model, here's a little snippet:

To calculate the prosperity cap, multiply the prosperity value of each house by the current (not maximum) population. Add up this number for each house in your city, divide by the total population and round down to a whole number. For example, if you you are playing on Hard and have 1300 people living in Rough Cottages (100 Rough Cottages if they are all full) and you have 1000 people living in Common Residences (say 25 Common Residences each half full), your prosperity cap is:

(1300*25 + 1000*60) / 2300 = 40

This is different from the way the cap is calculated in Caesar III, but after a number of tests, I am reasonably sure that this is the way it works in Pharaoh.

New Pharaoh Contest
Cherub Baltic has posted a message in Competition Corner. I'll quote the entire post here, since Baltic's looking for your feedback:

Hello again,
the Competition Board makes apperance after a deserved break. To celebrate the upcoming Zeus, and also the new home of HeavenGames, we would like to organize a small competition... just one speed mission. Yes, it would be the one that was planned for Pharaolympics, but then we took it out to give you more time to play other missions... Feast or Famine.
Question is, are you interested in it right now? Or are you so eager to see Zeus, that you don't want to let it disturb you?

If there is enough interest, competition will start this Friday. You'll find the link for download and description of the mission in this forum. We are waiting for your replies!

New Look for Heaven
Now that things seem to be settling down a bit here on our new server (yes, we know about the occasional IS errors, and are working to fix them), it's time to introduce a couple of new sites to the place we all call HeavenGames.

First off, welcome to SCNPunk, AOK scenario designers extraordinare - if you're looking for news on AOK scenario making, then they're the guys to see about it.

We are also proud to present Empire Earth Heaven, dedicated to the upcoming RTS by Stainless Steel Studios. Feel free to head over and give Angel Park a warm welcome to Heaven :).

1 more thing - a new logo has also been created to mark our new beginning. For the moment, you can see it here, but it will be put on all Heaven sites over the next few days :).

Cleo Patch: Update
Itchy posted a message to the official Cleopatra forum regarding the status of the upcoming Cleo patch:

We are working on an update to address issues in Cleo, but with Zeus going out, we want to make sure we give the Cleo update our undivided attention and have it translated/localized so everyone will get it at the same time.

Test...
If you can read this, then welcome to the new server :). Things might still be a little bit Heath Robinson around here for another day or so - please bear with us (again) while we test everything.

If you find something that doesn't work, then first of all, try 5 more times. If nothing happens after that, then drop me a line to let me know what's going on. Thanks :).

Upcoming Service Disruption
f you experience problems accessing this site, indeed any other HGS sites, this coming Friday (13th), this will be due to the fact that we're switching servers.

The forums will be read-only from Thursday evening to allow us to have as seamless a transfer as possible. New registrations will also not be accepted until we're settled at our new home, which should, if all goes according to plan, be at some point over the weekend.

Thanks for bearing with us - it'll be worth it .

Patch?
everal gaming sites have reported that a new Pharaoh patch was released yesterday (see here for an example).

As far as I can tell, this patch is the same one as has been available for a long time now - it merely upgrades v1.1 to v1.2.

SGO Reviews Cleo
nother Cleo review came to my attention today while I was browsing Evil Avatar. This one's from Strategy Games Online, and is generally more positive than the French one below. It gives Cleo a pretty big thumbs up, calling it "a worthy addition to a modern classic", and slaps a score of 8.6/10 one it:

Speaking of larger goals, a new addition to the game are blessings. While building pyramids and the like you can now have the gods bless its construction, thereby having a section completed instantly. This alleviates the only significant problem with the original. While playing Pharaoh one often thought they'd die of old age before they saw their pyramid completed. While monuments are still a huge undertaking, this addition goes a long way in making sure your attention isn't diverted from the otherwise excellent pacing of the scenarios.

D'oh! Forgot the link.

French Cleo Review
n the wake of the German review we reported on a couple of weeks back, thanks go out to Sinuhe for pointing this French Cleopatra review out to me.

If you can't parler francais, then don't panic - just plug in a Babelfish .
